The novel is all about how loneliness perishes her for all of her eternity even she is capable of being loved. No matter how far she runs, solitude remains as her shadow. The eternity of loneliness haunts her both day and night. Circe is the embodiment of valour, power, wickedness, self-centered, empathetic and hefty package of motherliness. Right from her childhood until her self-earned freedom, she never seized to pull herself up over the heap of dumped expectations set by patriarchy.
Circe is one of the often misjudged mytholoigical characters from Greek mythology. Circe is a well-known Greek goddess-sorceress, naiad and daughter of Greek Sun God, Helios and Perse, Oceanid-nymph She has the century long burden on her shoulders which she has broken and resulted in banishment from her long known home. The narrative begins from the lonesome childhood of Circe to the protective motherhood of hers. Right from the childhood, Circe leads a solitary life even while she is surrounded by her family.
The person on whom Circe expresses her utmost love and care tends to leave her behind for their selfishness. People often blame her for the circumstances even when she intends for the wellness of everyone. Soon Circe possesses her own magical powers that outstands the expectations on her and there begins the story. The story gives the chance to narrative of Circe from her perspective. The life of Circe takes long road for her to reach the destinations which she earned for herself as per her command. The sole lesson of the story explicitly is to be persistent in getting what one wants. People and circumstances often attempt to undermine her serenity and drag her into the darkside of the characterization. Madeline Miller portrayed Circe as the strongest, witty woman of the overruled ancient misogyny society in her millennial mythological fiction.
The setting of the novel has preserved the ancient hinge throughout the modernized narration of the story. The characterization of this novel has outnumbered yet Circe outshines everyone. The spotlight for other characters such as Helios, Daedalus, Odysseus, Telegonus, Telemachus and Scylla are portrayed exponentially. Even though the story is detailed about the life of Circe, I randomly felt that there are the few arms left out in some scenes.
The language of the novel is lucid and has the influence of modernizing the mythical subject, which makes the readers easily relate to it. The writing style draws the readers towards the shifts of the story moods and maintains the flow of the narration for a substantial amount of time. The cover of the novel has the appearance of glossy and shining armor protecting the actual self of Circe within it.
Overall, the novel is the sumptuous feast for the mythology and fantasy readers who enjoy the opulent stories. I would like to suggest this book for all the age group readers who wish to experience the entirety of Greek Mythological Fiction.
Happy Reading!
