The novel is well popular one among the readers community. To cross check the worth of its hype, let’s dissect the the contents of the novel. As in most of the YA novels, the plot begins with the lives of two teenagers. But unlikely, these two teens teach the distinct perspectives about the liveliness of the life and make you feel alive.
Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 17 years old cancer survivor, uses the nasal canulas of Philip, her oxygen supply tank for 24 x 7 to breathe. She was diagnosed with Stage IV Thyroid cancer with metastasis spreading throughout her lungs. Augustus Water, also known as Gus, has also been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and uses his prosthetic leg to walk. After Hazel mother’s advice, Hazel joined The Support Group for cancer survivors and who are suffering with cancer. They both meet there and the story revolves around them from the perspective of Hazel.
Hazel reads Peter Van Houten’s An Imperial Affliction in a repetitive mode and she started to reflect her favourite character through her appearance. She wishes to meet the author in person in order to get the answers for her questions concerning the ending of the particular novel. She also makes Augustus to read the book and the two begin to converse about it.
Even in his distress, Augustus keeps his surrounding energetic and more lively for the people around him. He shows Hazel hope in the path of her life and makes her feel alive. Despite romance and stuffs, they both have a good friendship between them. Augustus wants Hazel to live her life to the fullest and he has shown her how to do so.
The novel sets in Indiana, USA. The writing style of the novel is lucid and beginner-friendly. The language of this novel is exquisite. The author brings the picturesque of the cancer patients’ life and tribulations which reminds us the blessings of our life.
I used to buy books with no idea what they were about or what they would offer me. This book is one among them. It brought me nothing but wreckedness! I usually remember the most of things about the books that I had read some years back. But this is the first ever book which gave the numbness right after finishing it back in 2019 and still I don’t get anything about it except the searing agony with the same impact. If you haven’t read this, I highly highly suggest you to read this novel (under your own risk for heartbreak).
PS: A movie, based on this novel, was released under the same title. And in 2020, Bollywood remade the same under the title Dil Bechara starring late Sushant Singh Rajput which was his last movie.
But, in fact, depression is not a side effect of cancer. Depression isa side effect of dying. p. 3
