Book Review – The Odd Life of Bethany Sutterfield

It is not the reader who finds their next read but the story itself. The one who knew me and who read this story may understand why I said so.

The life of a teenager gets haunted after losing her… Better get into the reviewing part.

Well, our protagonist, Bethany is in her final year of high school when she encountered the tragedy of her life and everything begins there maybe even before! At present, she is in her college and constantly dreaming about a haunted young spooky boy. There begins her search for the quest behind her dreams and the odd events that are happening in her life.

I loved the flow of the story where there are ceased times in the life of Bethany who pushes herself from being ceased. Everyone suffers their own struggles, agony and internal pressures. But when you are proceeding towards what you are doing what has been admired even success itself will come to you. Read this story, as if you are the protagonist and made yourself break free from the clutches that trapped you.

Other than Bethany, four other characters caught my attention in this story. First of all, I love Clara, Bethany’s friend who stands with her last step to get Bethany out from what she is going through. Then there is Bethany’s mother about whom I don’t want to explain what mother love is. There comes Brandon whose presence will make us think that everyone needs someone like him as a comfortable friend. At last, as in everyone’s life, a stranger will come for you, stands for you and fight for you without expecting anything. Here too I came across such a character (to find the character, let’s read).

The language of the book is lucid and grips you tight till the end. Even though the story is short, its impact is much enough to disturb you for quite some time. I felt the diaspora elements right from the beginning of the journey of Bethany. With the limited characters, the story is well built with its structure with ease.

Even I had finished this book a month back, it takes time to put my words together.

To read the right book at the right time, I recommend this short read.

Some lines that caught me:

Sometimes present life illness goes away after remembering the past events. p. 16

My mom had once said, “When life is difficult, you find solace in unusual places and unknown people.” p.27

Happy reading!
