Kite Runner becomes my top favourite read and most anticipated novel of all time. It takes days to put up my words to write a review on this novel. A real heartbreaking novel. I have not realised this masterpiece creates a deep impact in me which is still hard to come out of it.
The entire novel, as usual in Hosseini’s novels, sets in 1970s Afghanistan. The novel is about the friendship between two young little boys, Amir and Hassan in Kabul. The Kite plays a vital role from the Title of the novel to the last page of the story. The classic livelihood of Afghanistan is always brought out by Hosseini with careful minute details of descriptions.
Amir, a Pashtun and Hassan, a Hazara are at the same age of twelve-year old. Amir is growing a son of the famous person of Kabul whereas Hassan is growing as Hazara’s (Ali’s) son. Hassan and his father lived in a small cottage at the backyard of Amir’s beautiful palace in Kabul. Like the boys, their fathers are also friends from their birth. Hassan’s father, Ali is working from his childhood in the household of Ghazi’s house, Amir’s grandfather. Amir’s father is a courageous person. From the beginning of the novel, he is shown with huge respect, a person with all his virtues in Wazir Akbhar Khan district. Amir admires his father and always attempts to please him which results as the terrible one.
Every person needs an admirer who motivates them to pursue what they love to do in their life. In this story, Amir got Hassan and Rahim Khan who always admire and encourage Amir’s talent for writing stories. One of the most beautiful scenes of the novel is Amir’s narration of recent read stories to Hassan which was loved by Hassan himself. Hassan always lends his ears to Amir whenever Amir narrates the story.
Hassan is bold enough even from his early age and always stands to protect Amir from any cause. But Amir is always cautious about his prestige and status during the company of Hassan in public. The childhood of Amir is filled with all his needs with a loyal friend like Hassan. They proudly call themselves “Sultans of Kabul”.
Hosseini had woven the difference between Kabul before and after the intrusion of Taliban. The restrictions, the trait, the sufferings, and the diaspora had been highly captivating in the entire story. The novel is written with the literary style of Bildungsroman which lays the strong base for the novel. The novel covers every aspect of ones life except the protagonist’s love for his mother. But it is also fulfilled by Sofia’s mother, Jamila Taheri/Khanum Taheri who truly loved Amir wholeheartedly.
The fresh piece of Hosseini’s hands gave this fantabulous work without any hindrance. Each and every scene has a unique storyline that steals the heart of readers like me.
For you, a thousand time over.
Proud moment: I have completed this novel within twenty-four hours of time. It is so nerve-gripping amazing work. Highly highly recommend for reading.
Warning: Softhearted people please have some courage and water by your side. Because it is an emotion-draining book and you cannot escape from it.
